The province of Talesh is situated between two rivers of Sepidrud in Gilan and Kura in Azerbaijan and for long has been the homeland of Taleshi people, one of the civilized and deep-rooted tribes inhabited shores of the Caspian Sea. Inhabitants of this land speak Taleshi, which is among the Indo-European or Aryan languages from the northwest of Iran. Their language, music and culture are distinct from those of Gilan. Nonetheless, owing to such historical causes as the disintegration of Talesh into two divisions under the Qajar reign (separation of 17 cities of Caucasus from Iran) and constant pressures on this region over the last two hundred years, rich culture of this tribe is regrettably ignored and not considered by Iranians as having the same status as that of other tribes (Kurds, Baluchs, Gilaks, etc.); and to them it only seems a geographical area rather than a tribe. However, it is worth noting that at the time being there are around one million Taleshi speakers in Iran and twice as many in other republics like Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia, and more.
